Kids' Art Contest Highlights Road Safety
Young artists - get ready to show off your talent! Federal Motor Carrier Administration's (FMCSA) 2017 Road Safety Art Contest encourages children to use their creativity and artistic skills to raise awareness on how everyone – including large trucks and buses, cars, bicyclists, and pedestrians – plays important roles in keeping our roads safe.
The contest is open to all students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Previously known as the “Be Ready, Be Buckled” Safety Belt Art Contest, this year’s contest expanded from emphasizing the importance of commercial truck and bus drivers using safety belts to educating passenger vehicle drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians to coexist on the same roadways as commercial motor vehicles and work together to reduce crashes.
The contest is organized by the Our Roads, Our Safety Partnership and the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Belt Partnership, which includes FMCSA and 31 other government, safety, industry, and private organizations. These partnerships are essential to amplifying the safety messages about buckling up and understanding the challenges and special considerations when traveling near or around buses and large trucks.
The partnerships will award one grand prize winner and five honorable mention winners in each of two categories. Category A includes artists in kindergarten through second grades and category B includes artists in third through sixth grades. All 12 winners will receive a certificate of recognition and have their artwork included in the 2018 Road Safety Art Contest Calendar, which will be distributed nationwide.
Safety is at the heart of the FMCSA’s mission and strategic partnerships. Programs like the art contest engage our most precious resource – children – in promoting safe driving across the country. All of us – drivers, passengers, bicyclists, and pedestrians – must work together to reduce highway crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
