A Veterans Day Message

A Veterans Day Message

Distributed to all USDOT employees:

On Veterans Day, November 11th, we honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. They put themselves in harm’s way to safeguard our freedoms and protect our country.

Each year, more than 200,000 members of our military services transition to civilian life. I’m proud the Department plays a role in making these transitions successful by actively recruiting and hiring veterans, who make up 29 percent of the DOT workforce.

In addition, this year the Department launched two new programs to help veterans get jobs in transportation. The Under 21 Military Driver Pilot Program helps military-trained truck drivers under the age of 21 obtain an interstate Commercial Driver’s License. And the Department’s Forces to Flyers program partners with select flight schools to provide military veterans the training they need to become commercial pilots. These programs not only help veterans, but address our country’s need for a skilled transportation workforce.

So this Veterans Day, I hope you will join me in thanking the veterans who work with us, and remembering in our hearts all those who serve – especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
